- What’s the average stay of senior leaders?
- Are leaders homegrown or consistently recruited from outside?
Use LinkedIn, local media, and board reports. You’re not researching the brand—you’re uncovering the operating system.
Step Two: Interview the Interviewers
Ask intentional and revealing questions that surface how power, conflict, and values are really managed.
Try:
“Can you describe a time when financial targets clashed with clinical priorities? How was that resolved?”
Listen for transparency, involvement of stakeholders, and how authority was exercised.
Follow with a question to gain insight on change management:
“Tell me about a time when a new initiative was undertaken? What was the process and timeline to make the decision and move forward? How was any resistance to the change managed?”
Generic answers = generic culture. Seek specificity.
Step Three: Test Scenario Fit Before You Sign

“If I needed to reduce staffing while protecting care standards, how would the process unfold?”
This tells you whether you’ll need to build consensus or act decisively, and whether your leadership style will be empowered—or constrained.
